For this assignment, I chose to research local news from my home town of South Walton in the panhandle.
"Toilet Paper Burglar Wanted in Florida"
This news article speaks about a white male breaking into numerous unlocked vehicles in various neighborhoods in Inlet Beach, Florida. Authorities say the man has been caught on camera stealing toilet paper, wipes, and bags of clothing out of vehicles the night of January 22nd. The problem here people being at risk for theft and harm during the hours after sundown. The individuals who possess the problem are the residents and guests of Inlet Beach and surrounding neighborhoods.
"Investigators identify woman hit by 2 vehicles, killed in Niceville"
This news article speaks about authorities identifying the 41-year old woman in Niceville, Florida who was killed by the impact of two individual vehicles. Florida Highway Patrol officers says the woman, Ginger Drake, of Defuniak Springs stepped out into oncoming traffic on Highway 20 and was hit by a Jeep Grand Cherokee. Shortly after the initial impact, Drake was then hit by a Chrysler minivan and passed away at the scene of the accident after being thrown off the road. The problem being presented was not being able to identify the deceased and the people who had this problem were Florida Highway Patrol, Ginger Drake, and Drake's friends and family.
"Common Core Curriculum Being Replaced in Florida Schools"
This news article speaks about Governor Desantis removing the required Common Core Curriculum and replacing it with Florida's "B.E.S.T" standards, which stands for Benchmarks for Excellent Student Thinking. The B.E.S.T standards will take away said confusing math which hand in hand deducts points for doing the problem the wrong way. It has said to be that although the way students learn and grow constantly changes, the standards for learning hardly ever do. The problem at hand is that the Common Core Curriculum is outdated and not as beneficial as the B.E.S.T standards. The people who possess this problem are students, teachers, administration, and students' families who struggle with implementing Common Core and helping it benefit their students.
"FHP Drug Dog Helps Officers Make Meth Arrest"
This news article speaks about K9 Remy being deployed to a Nissan Altima after being pulled over on Interstate 10 going westbound near mile marker 60. Florida Highway Patrol says that the vehicle operator admitted to having marijuana on him during the traffic stop and that was why Remy was sent in to assist. Shortly afterward, Remy found multiple different drugs, including meth. The problem is the drugs being in possession of civilians and potentially causing harm to the user and others around him as he was operating a speeding vehicle. The Florida Highway Patrol, the citizens of the community, and the vehicle operator all have this problem.
"Woman Charged with Child Abuse in Crestview"
This news article talks about Elyssa Alves, a 33-year old Crestview resident who was charged with child abuse after she picked up a child named Kyle from a Lutheran Service "Hope House", a place intended to keep children out of the juvenile justice system. Though the child's age and relation to Alves were not disclosed, it is said that there is video evidence of Alves putting the child in a headlock, shoving him, and striking and kicking him. The child denied that Alves struck him later on in an interview. The problem here is obviously the lack of safety of the child, Kyle, and child abuse as a whole. The people who possess this problem are personally Kyle, any other child in close contact with Alves, and other children being abused.
